Best bargain in the city, it still costs a mere quarter to get on the Staten Island Ferry and come back again. The breezy tourist can hop on the ferry for a quick trip "out of town" right past Lady Liberty herself. The only view better is the one coming back when the downtown skyline appears to float on the water of New York Harbor.

The Museum of the City of New York is one of the best kept secrets of all the museums in the city. There is something here for everyone: Of the 1.5 million objects, 2,000 are paintings from the 17th century to the present. There are historical maps, old props and playbills for theater buffs, and clothing worn by 17th century Dutch New Yorkers. Rare and unique toys, fire-fighting equipment, a Bellevue Hospital ambulance, 19th century police paddy wagon and an old barber's chair are just some of the treasures on display. Closed Mondays.

It still draws artists, Wall Street whizzes, local knock-abouts and tourists who want to see where Dylan Thomas infamously drank himself to death (with some 18 shots of whiskey) at the tender age of 39.
